
In May 2009, CIC announced an enhanced and extended Aboriginal Bursary Program.
Eligible Aboriginal students at the University of Saskatchewan (Edwards School of Business), University of Regina, SIAST, Lakeland College and the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) may apply for a bursary. Each institution will receive up to 20 bursaries per year, up to $100,000 per academic year, with a maximum of $500,000 over a five year period ending with the 2013-14 academic year.
The bursary focus at SIAST and SIIT is in the area of business, trades and technology.
U of S bursaries will be available to business students. U of R bursaries are available to all academic disciplines. Students will receive $2,500 per semester or $5,000 per academic year for a full bursary. To be eligible, undergraduate registered students must be Status Indian, non-status Indian, Métis or Inuit. They must be residents of Saskatchewan for at least the previous 12 month period, have a minimum 70% average, and must demonstrate financial need, leadership and/or community service.
Since the program began in 2004, to the end of 2008, 464 bursaries were awarded with a total value of approximately $1.2 M.
