The establishment of the First Nations and Métis Fund was announced on May 11, 2006.
CIC will provide $20 million to the fund for projects to be allocated by 2012.
The Fund will make investments in new or expanding businesses which are majority-owned or controlled by First Nations or Métis communities, organizations or individuals. To be eligible the business must be focused on the following sectors:
- Value-added agriculture
- Advanced technology
- Energy
- Mining
- Forestry and forestry developments
- Manufacturing
