Mr. Justice Thomas Wakeling has resigned from the committee that was established to review Saskatchewan's no-fault insurance plan.
"It is with regret that I accept Mr. Justice Wakeling's resignation ," Crown Investments Corporation Minister John Nilson said. "He has made this decision for personal reasons and I must respect his wishes. I would like to thank him for his hard work and dedication to this important task and I wish him well."
Wakeling had been Chair of the Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP) Review Committee which was established on December 14, 1999. PIPP, commonly known as no-fault insurance, was introduced January 1, 1995, through changes to The Automobile Accident Insurance Act. The legislation called for a five-member committee to be established within five years of the plan's inception to review all aspects of PIPP.
"We expect to announce a replacement for Mr. Justice Wakeling in the near future," Nilson said. "Until then, the committee will carry on with its important research work and preparations for public meetings."
WAKELING RESIGNATION LETTER
April 11, 2000
Honourable John Nilson, Q.C.
Minister of Crown Investments Corporation
Room 361, Legislative Building
Regina, Saskatchewan
S4S 0B3
Dear Mr. Nilson,
Re: PIPP Review Committee
I have not found my work with the PIPP Review Committee to be as rewarding an experience as I had originally hoped and expected. Indeed, over the past several weeks the work of the Committee has become very stressful to the point I cannot avoid taking it home with me. While it has never been my practice not to finish what I originally agreed to undertake, I believe that for personal reasons the time has come for me to resign and I ask that you accept this letter as my resignation.
I am satisfied that arrangements are now in place to assure the public hearings will proceed in an orderly and professional fashion. I mention this only because I want you to be assured I am not seeking to abandon a ship in distress. My resignation at this time has the advantage of enabling any replacement you may appoint to obtain the benefit of hearing all the presentations made at these hearings.
Yours truly,
T.C. Wakeling
