The Government is taking several steps to promote the long-term stability of the construction industry in Saskatchewan.
An amendment to The Construction Industry Labour Relations Act (CILRA) will be introduced in the spring sitting of the Legislature to prohibit unionized contractors from operating non-unionized spin-off companies.
The Crown Construction tendering Agreement (CCTA) , which was introduced in 1995 to ensure workers on Crown construction projects received a fair wage, will be extended to allow for an effective transition under the amended Act. The Government has also adopted guidelines for the tendering of all Government construction projects.
"Eliminating the practice of double-breasting from the construction industry and lifting the CCTA will contribute to stability in the construction industry," Labour Minister Joanne Crofford said.
"Reducing the tensions within the industry and having a level playing field in which to operate are essential to the health of the industry and the provincial economy, to encouraging skilled construction workers to remain in Saskatchewan and to the development of new skilled workers through apprenticeship programs."
