ALCATEL PLANT IN WEYBURN IS DOUBLING ITS SIZE

Alcatel is investing over $20 million to double the capacity of its power cable manufacturing plant in Weyburn, creating 60 new jobs over the next two years.

"This is a vote of confidence in the people who work at this plant and in our province as a place to do business," Deputy Premier and Crown Investments Corporation Minister Dwain Lingenfelter said at the announcement today.

Lingenfelter noted that SaskPower is a major customer of the Weyburn Alcatel plant through its 'buy Saskatchewan' policy which results in nine of every ten dollars it spends on goods and services going to Saskatchewan suppliers.

"The expansion of this major manufacturing facility in Weyburn is a good example of how local purchasing by Crown corporations helps to create jobs in Saskatchewan," Lingenfelter said. "The province is also pleased to provide assistance for training of new employees through the JobStart/Future Skills program. It will cover up to half the training costs for as many as 60 new employees over the next two years."

Construction on 40,000 square feet of new space at the Alcatel Plant will begin this week.
